London City Presbyterian Church David talking with some of the congregation
Our Leaders
The images and biographical notes below are an introduction to our leaders. As a Presbyterian Church belonging to the Free Church of Scotland we are led by a group of elders called the Kirk Session, one of whom serves as the 'teaching elder' or Minister and the others serve with him in pastoral care and leadership roles.

Rev. David Strain
David was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland and became a Christian in his teenage years. After he studied Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, in Dundee, David worked for two years with the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF), first in Dundee and then in Glasgow. In 1998 he married Sheena, and went on to study theology at the University of Glasgow. In 2001 David did further study at the Free Church of Scotland College in Edinburgh, graduating in 2003, and was ordained by the Free Presbytery of Edinburgh and Perth to the pastoral ministry in Cole Abbey Presbyterian Church (now LCPC) in October of the same year.

David has two sons, Euan and Joel, likes to cook (and eat!) and enjoys reading theology and science fiction, watching movies, and exploring the interaction of the Christian faith with popular culture.

Angus Martin
Angus has been a communicant member  since 1983. Elected as a Deacon in 1988 and as an Elder in 1993, he has been closely involved in LCPC for more than 20 years.

As you may have guessed Angus is a Scot, and started going to the Free Church (in Stornoway) at about the age of 6 weeks. Born into a Christian home, he has been aware of Biblical truth all his life but it was not till coming to London that God spoke effectually to him.

Angus came to London in 1981 'for a couple of years' with a degree in Geography and a burning desire to leave home, see the world, and be an accountant! Not long after arriving he met and married Carelien who hails from the Netherlands. Today they have 4 children (Stuart 17, Fiona 16, Philip 12 and Alexander 4- well almost 5!) all born in England. With close family split fairly evenly between Scotland and Holland, London is a convenient, if challenging, location.

Working in Central London (as an Accountant for a Travel Agent) Angus has been able to mix a hectic London lifestyle and bringing up a family with contributions to the life of congregation and has always has been convinced he was fulfilling God's plan for him in LCPC.

Peter Fraser
Peter comes from the Lochaber area of  Western Highlands of Scotland. Having studied Electronics and Electrical Engineering at Glasgow University and worked for a number of years in Edinburgh he moved "down south" to do an M.Sc. The planned year in London has now extended to over a decade during which he met his wife Fenna. Peter was elected an elder in 1999 and is the Session Clerk - Secretary to the Kirk Session.

Peter is a Software Engineer and, in denial of his fast disappearing youth, still likes to play football regularly.

Gustavo Assi
The Bible says that God’s knowledge is too wonderful for us to attain, but it also tells us to trust Him heartily, because his will is good, pleasing and perfect. What a comfort! We are amazed by the way God works through his church around the world. Before leaving Brazil , we were praying that God would show us a church in London where we could find faithfulness to the Scriptures but also where we could be useful for his service.

God brought us to LCPC. First, we found the same reassuring doctrine from our own Presbyterian church in São Paulo. Then, we found a place where we could put our spiritual gifts to work, for the benefit of The Body and for His glory!

The calling to serve as an elder was an incredible surprise. I would never expect this appointment to come at my age, especially outside my home church. However, if we were seeking God’s answer for the prayers I mentioned before, this fact came as a wonderful confirmation. We understood that God wanted us to serve at LCPC because He knows we are useful for his work here. Now we thank God and pray that He will bless our LCPC to grow together in faith!

Gustavo was born in Brazil and lived most of his life in São Paulo . He was brought up in Ebenézer Presbyterian Church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil, where he met his wife at the youth group. Lilian and Gustavo were married in December 2005, just before moving to London. At the moment, he is conducting his PhD research, at Imperial College, on Fluid Dynamics, but he got his first degree as a Naval and Ocean Engineer and a MSc in Mechanical Engineering in Brazil . Gustavo was elected an elder in March 2007.
